Coffee and chocolate: two of nature's great stimulants, harnessed by man to provide pleasure and comfort for thousands of years. Having spent so long perfecting the best ways of extracting and locking in the flavour from a coffee bean, it was only a matter of time before we took a look at the other bean – cocoa.
Chocolate, perhaps because of its relative age, has suffered even more at the hands of mass production than coffee. In some countries, cultural and historical traditions conspired to turn this noble ingredient into a sickly sweet confection. Contrast this with the Spanish experience, where you start your day by dipping bread into a bowl of thick, cold and very strong cocoa paste; not that far removed from the ancient Aztec tradition.
In creating the The Other Bean – our real hot chocolate - we battled between our instinct to create a food purist’s drink, and to recognise the tastes of the average chocoholic. We’re very pleased with the end result: it has the high cocoa content and pure ingredient list that we demanded, yet it will still appeal to chocolate lovers everywhere.
The best hot chocolate needs the best cocoa...
The Other Bean is no ordinary hot chocolate. In addition to a high cocoa content, we searched for a variety of bean and a growing region that would satisfy our ethics and our taste buds. Our search for high quality cocoa brought us to the Kuapa Kokoo co-operative in Ghana: they harvest cocoa of the highest quality, grown and traded in equitable conditions.
Kuapa Kokoo is a co-op created and run by the farmers themselves. Fairtrade ensures the price they receive for their harvest never falls below an agreed minimum. And the cocoa is truly superb. That’s why we use so much of it in The Other Bean: with 40% cocoa content, it has nearly five times more than other brands. When we supplement this with a dash of cane sugar from a Fairtrade co-op in Malawi, we can truly say that The Other Bean is rich, smooth – and above all – fair.

The Other Bean Chocolate for Kids is in a league of its own. We carefully sourced the best Fairtrade Organic Chocolate with a 35% cocoa content for younger palates and for those who prefer a slightly sweeter taste without the calorie content. The chocolate for The Other Bean Kids is sourced from Fairtrade Organic Certified Co-Ops from around the world. The sugar is sourced from a Fairtrade Organic Co-Operative in Paraguay.
