Baristas were judged under two categories: sensory | creativeness (which covers taste and visual appeal) and technical ability (which covers consistency, waste and use of crockery and cleanliness.)In an espresso, the judges would be looking for a good colour, good cream and great taste. In a cappuccino, outside of technical correctness, the judges would look at whether the Barista has achieved the right foam. No chocolate is allowed to be sprinkled on the top of the cappuccino to camourflage any error in technical consistency.
Nine Baristas competed in this year's competition. They fought off tough competition in the regional finals and we wish them well. The winner of the Java Republic National Barista Competition will go through to the Avonmore Irish Barista Competition Semi-Finals which will be held at the Java Republic Roastery on 12 to 13 November.
