Barista Finals!
Two expert coffee makers representing Cork and Kerry took part in the 4th annual Java Republic Barista Championships in Dublin recently. Qualifying from the regional final held in Bandon, Paul Budds of Café Gusto in Cork City and Cherie Baker from The Daily Grind café in Tralee joined 13 others from the four provinces of the country, at Java Republic’s Roastery near Dublin airport to take part in the prestigious event. For the last four years, Java Republic clients, whether hotels, café’s, bars or restaurants can nominate a member of their staff they deem to be experts in the art of making coffee to take part in the barista competition. Competitors are judged according to international barista competition standards and include an ability to make espressos, cappuccinos and a signature coffee, all in a set amount of time. The Island Beverage Company, distributors for Java Republic based in Bandon held regional finals to whittle down the field and two strong contestants went through to the national final last week. The standard of this year’s entrants was extremely high, with the overall winner coming from Dublin. Kieran White, director of The Island Beverage Company was delighted with the effort made by the contestants in his area and is already looking forward to sending a strong delegation to next years event. As the year closes, Java Republic is looking back at what has been a busy year. Kieran recalls a long list of his company’s involvement in the local community during the past year, “We never take for granted the support we get from our customers who make a conscious decision to choose our products so we are delighted to be able to give something back to the community by sponsoring coffee days or events. Some of the events and organizations we’ve been involved with include Daffodil Day, Suicide Awareness, West Cork Rally, Clon Duathlons, Bandon Community Hospital, Breast Cancer Awareness, Rossmore Drama Festival, Ardfield Threshing Festival, Business Breakfast meetings at Clon GAA Pavilion, Clon Chamber of Commerce, Timoleague Fashion Show, St. Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal, Restaurants Assoc. of Ireland, Kerry Hotels Federation, 3 Irish Open, Dingle Film Festival, Bandon Golf Club, Aileen McCarthy Ugandan fundraiser, Scoil na mBuachaillí Fun Day and we are currently fundraising for Clon’s Mount Carmel Hospital by taking part in the upcoming Clonakilty Waterfront Marathon!”
SUPPORTING HAITI
In another ‘first.’ one of Ireland’s leading ethical coffee roasting companies, Java Republic, official launched new ‘Voodoo’ and ‘Zombi’ blends of Haitian coffee in this country. When Haiti was decimated from a powerful earthquake on January 12th last, the world came together to offer assistance and aid to the country, which is approximately the size of Munster, but with nine million inhabitants. Over 250,000 people died and another one million were left homeless. Millions of euro was sent in the initial aftermath of the quake, but now the country is trying to find its feet again and set-up sustainable industries in an effort to create long-term hope in the region. As part of this effort, David McKernan, founder of Java Republic, contacted representatives in Haiti to ask if the Irish company could help in any way. Fast forward several months and Java Republic has invested $100,000 in a shipment of Haitian coffee beans as a means of supporting Haitian coffee growers to get their livelihoods back on a positive footing. Special guests and distributors, including Paul Hayes of the Island Beverage Company – distributors of Java Republic for the Cork-Kerry area – assembled in The Roastery in Dublin to see the launch of the blends, which have been perfected since the first container arrived form Haiti at the beginning of June. From July 12th, the new blends will be rolled out to customers in the Cork and Kerry area who may continue to support the people of Haiti in their effort to re-build their shattered lives by asking for a cup of ‘Voodoo’ or ‘Zombi’ wherever they see the Java Republic logo!
