Java Republic – A Carbon Neutral Company

2021 marked 10 years of carbon neutrality for Java Republic

Ten years ago, Java Republic invested in an environmentally conscious future by building the first purpose-built carbon-neutral roastery in the world.

Sustainability is at the heart of our culture. Since its foundation, Java Republic has worked to better its carbon footprint by continually working on its business practices to ensure that the environmental impact of operations is kept to a minimum.

Respect the People – Respect the Environment.

Our passion for the environment and sustainability is embedded into the core of everything we do. As part of this, we work hard to ensure and protect our carbon neutrality status each and every year.

In 2008, Java Republic opened our unique custom-built Roastery in Ballycoolin, Dublin. In 2011 we were officially awarded carbon-neutral status, meaning that we can proudly say that we have the first purpose-built carbon-neutral Roastery in the world.

Since then we have continually worked towards sustainability and protecting the environment in any way possible. Our goal is to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide it takes to produce 1kg of coffee by 1% year-on-year. Other steps we have taken include the introduction of our compostable and reusable cups, and our recycling of coffee sacks and coffee chaff to name but a few. We are always looking at new ways to protect our environment.

So what is carbon neutrality?

Carbon neutrality is the term used to describe the actions that companies and organisations take to remove as much carbon dioxide as possible from the atmosphere, relative to how much they put into it as a result of their activities. While it is almost impossible for a business to have zero carbon emissions, there are a number of other ways to achieve carbon neutrality. One of these is through the purchasing of “Carbon Credits” which is a way of counterbalancing your emissions. Carbon Credits (also referred to as Carbon Offsetting) help to combat global climate change, as well as supporting and caring for local communities.

Carbon Clear

For a number of years we have worked closely with Carbon Clear, a world leading provider of carbon and energy management and sustainability services. Through them we purchase carbon credits in projects worldwide. Up until last year we were involved with the Wayang-Windu Geothermal Power Plant in Indonesia. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 794,000 tonnes per year, this project also planted 500,000 trees and supported communities by offering scholarships to 3,000 students.

Madre de Dios REDD+ Peru Project

This year, we are supporting a new project in Peru which preserves 1,000 hectares of Peruvian Amazon from deforestation. The Madre de Dios REDD+ Peru Project is being implemented in the Vilcabamba-Amboro Conservation Corridor. The area is one of the world’s richest biodiversity hotspots, located close to UNESCO World Heritage Site Machu Picchu.

The tropical rainforest is under threat from the construction of an inter-oceanic road that will unite Brazil and Peru. The project reduces deforestation by monitoring and increasing enforcement in the area. It aims to contribute to the sustainable development of rural producers and indigenous communities, the Yine and Mashco Piro tribes.

To date it has saved:

Being a part of these amazing projects is something that we are extremely proud of.

Our philosophy is Coffee with a Conscience, which means that we go deeper than anyone to respect the people and respect the environment. We will continue to look at new ways to ensure that we always go above and beyond.

We make a promise to you that every cup of Java Republic coffee and tea will be ethical, sustainable, transparent and of the best quality.
