Java Republic Christmas Coffee Cup
The festive season is upon us; radio dials have adjusted to Christmas FM, our homes are filled with tinsel and fairy lights and our favourite winter warmers have landed in cafes. Each year we adapt our take away cups to celebrate the Christmas season. Here’s the story behind this year’s Celtic Christmas cup illustration.
Java Republic Illustration
Back in 2017, we partnered with leading international brand consultancy Image Now to continue our mission of delighting coffee and tea drinkers everywhere. As part of this rebranding, we commissioned Steve Doogan to create an illustration that depicts the journey of bean to cup. Steve’s illustration, which was officially launched in 2018, perfectly captured the journey of our coffee beans from the farmers to our Roastery in Ballycoolin, and from there to consumers across Ireland. This fantastic illustration is central to our branding appearing on packaging, cups, on our vans, and across our online channels. When it came to designing a 100% compostable Christmas Cup for 2019, reaching out to Steven again was an obvious choice.
Designing our Celtic Cup
The year’s brief was ‘A Celtic Christmas: The Journey of the Java Republic Van’. Steve popped into our Roastery Cafe in Java Republic HQ to sketch the illustration and our very own in-house Graphic Designer and Photographer Keith Moran was on hand to capture the behind the scenes. Like the original illustration, we were thrilled with the end result. This year’s 100% compostable Christmas Cup, depicts the journey of the Java Republic van through a Celtic Ireland, surrounded by the magic of Christmas. To capture Celtic Ireland the illustration shows famous Irish landmarks. Some of the landmarks featured are the Giants Causeway, Titanic Museum, Skellig Michael, Dublin Castle and of course Java Republic HQ, the world’s first purpose-built carbon neutral roastery.

When you order a takeaway coffee in our Roastery Cafe or Molesworth Street cafe we will only serve it to you in our compostable cups. Our 100% compostable cups are a key part of our ongoing sustainability plan to help us reduce our general waste to landfill year-on-year. All our 100% compostable cups, including our Christmas cup, are also available to all our customers and partners.
