Coffee Consumption in Ireland: Trends, Quality and Ethical Choices in 2025

Coffee has become an essential part of daily life in Ireland, woven into routines from morning commutes to afternoon breaks. New research commissioned by Java Republic reveals how the nation’s coffee habits have evolved over the past ten years.

Nearly half of Irish adults (47%) say they drink more coffee now than they did ten years ago. For many, that’s not just one daily cup, a quarter of coffee drinkers consume up to four cups per day, showing a strong and growing demand for coffee across Ireland.

Coffee Consumption Trends

The survey of 1,000 Irish adults, conducted by Amárach Research in March 2025, highlights that 76% of respondents identify as coffee drinkers. This number is slightly higher among men (79%) than women (73%).

Daily habits reveal that:

  • 68% drink 1–2 cups per day (with women more likely to stick to this range at 74%)
  • 5% enjoy 5–6 cups daily
  • 2% drink 6 or more cups per day

And the upward trend shows no signs of slowing with 40% of people drinking more coffee now than they did five years ago.

What Drives Consumer Choices?

When it comes to choosing their coffee, taste is the most important factor. A huge 88% of consumers prioritise flavour, with price (62%) coming in second.

But interestingly, even in times of rising costs, Irish coffee drinkers remain fiercely loyal to their daily brew:

  • 50% said they would not reduce consumption if prices went up

Irish coffee drinkers are clear about their priorities: 65% said they wouldn’t compromise on quality just to save money, while almost a quarter (23%) now factor ethical sourcing into their purchasing decisions.

Coffee has become a premium experience for many, one where taste, sustainability and ethical sourcing matter more than cutting costs.

At Java Republic, this insight reflects exactly what we stand for. From ethically sourced beans to barista quality training and service support, every step of what we do is built around delivering a premium coffee experience.

Jeffrey Long, Managing Director at Java Republic, explains why these trends matter:

“The coffee industry is evolving in response to rising costs, supply chain disruptions, and the growing impact of climate change on coffee-growing regions. Yet, one thing remains clear – consumers continue to prioritise high-quality, ethically sourced coffee. Sustainability is no longer just a trend; it is now a decisive factor in purchasing decisions.”

He adds:

“Amid these challenges, the future of coffee lies in innovation and responsible sourcing rather than cost-cutting. Businesses that invest in quality, barista expertise, and sustainable practices will be best positioned for long-term success. At Java Republic, we see these shifts as an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to premium coffee solutions, sustainability, and the evolving expectations of today’s coffee drinkers.”
